API 5L line pipe specification, suitable for the transportation of gas, oil and water.
API 5L is divided into two product levels: API 5L PSL1 and API 5L PSL2.
PSL1 is a standard PSL2 containing additional chemical, mechanical properties and testing requirements for line pipe quality. The grades covered by the API 5L specification are A25, A, B and "X" grades X42, X46, X52, X56, X60, X65, X70, X80. The two digits following the "X" indicate the minimum yield strength in 000 psi for pipe produced in that grade.
ASTM A106 (S/A 106) steel pipe is the standard specification for seamless carbon steel pipe used in high temperature and high pressure services such as power generation. ASTM A106 steel pipe includes three grades: ASTM A106 Grade A, ASTM A106 Grade B, and ASTM A106 Grade C.
API 5L is a relatively comprehensive specification developed primarily for line pipe for the oil and gas industry; it has a wider range of strength grades. While the lower strength grades A and B are comparable to ASTM A106, other grades are much stronger (such as X42, X56, X60, etc.). Additionally, special attention is paid to toughness and toughness testing for sour environments and higher pressure/temperature levels.
